Determining Your Future: 2009 Government Job and Internship Fair

By Hannah Barr

Students from St. Scholastica boarded a bus bright and early last Monday morning to journey to the cities to learn about internships and full-time employment opportunities with local, state, and federal agencies. Those who attended the 2009 Government Job and Internship Fair had the chance to learn from and visit with 40 government agencies. This year’s fair was held at the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis’ Coffman Union on Monday, October 26.

Many federal organizations were present from a variety of fields. Some organizations at the fair offered employment information for the Minnesota Air National Guard, Social Security Administration, and Minnesota Department of Public Safety and State Patrol. For students hoping looking to work for political parties, they had their chance to talk with individuals employed by Senator Al Franken and Senator Amy Klobuchar. Minnesota wasn’t the only state with representatives at the fair as the Wisconsin State Government also welcomed interested students at their booth.

Students who attended learned what positions and internships were available and when to apply. Informational sessions were held to provide students with a greater understanding of the employment requirements for departments like the Federal Executive Board of Minnesota. Job fairs prove to be excellent resources when looking for a job, so don’t miss your chance to attend the Government Job and Internship Fair next year!

CAB Halloween Dance is a Hit!

By Anne Woster

Zombies are Morgan Carlson, Mark Ostrander, Sammi Gutknecht, Jacy Hicks, Lauren Zahler, and Garret Peterson

After some indecision, CAB decided to host their annual Halloween dance, which was held this past Saturday. With help from CAB members, Storms Advocates, and student DJs (and of course the security guards, police officers, and staff) the dance kicked off at 8:00 p.m. and went until 12:00 a.m. As per usual there were only a few groups of students that arrived in the first hour and a half, but by 10:00 p.m. the dance was in full swing with great music, a mock bar (run by Storms Advocates), decorations, and of course plenty of creative and memorable costumes to take part in the annual costume contest.

As a CAB member, I had the privilege of joining forces with a fellow member and scour the dance floor for the night’s best dressed. The categories were Best Male Costume, Best Female Costume, and Best Group Costume. The choices were plenty and the decisions tough, but we reached the verdict and announced the winners.

All of the winners were chosen in a large part because of their creativity. Best Male Costume went to freshman Garin Hogan. His homemade Buddy the Elf costume completed with hot glue and felt was creative, well-executed, and just flat-out entertaining. The Female Costume winner was Mary Kallemeyn in her unique Jane Goodall costume complete with hat and camera. Last, but surely not least, the third category: the Group Costume winner. The winners’ dedication to their costume was impressive to say the least. As my fellow costume judge and I were scoping out the dance we looked toward the entrance and saw six zombies drag and grunt their way through the door. The enthusiasm that these six ‘undead’ showed was impressive, especially combined with their costumes and their convincing makeup.

Overall, the CAB Halloween dance went very well and without a hitch. Thank you to the Student DJs, Storms Advocates, fellow CAB members, and everyone else (especially those of you who attended) who helped make it a success.

Be an AMATEUR… WHY NOT?

By Jeremy Craycraft

College affords us the opportunity to try new things—sometimes positive and sometimes negative, but they ARE new experiences regardless. Are you seeking out new experiences?

Do you have “issues” with politics, religion, the economy—we have classes for that! Computers not your thing but should be—we have classes for that! In fact, we have classes on just about everything. We have classes that nurture your spirit and your artistic side. We have classes where you are required to go out in the community and perform for kids!

How many of you participate in intramurals, work out at the Wellness center, or catch a pick-up game in the Reif? Probably many of you, and you should—exercising is great for your health and your mood. What if there were other opportunities on campus that could also help your over all well being…

What would you say if I told you that I believe we (humans) are all performers at some level (though it may be hidden in the deep recesses of your soul!!!). CSS is a place where being an amateur musicianship, an amateur writer, or an amateur actor is a GOOD thing. Consider opening yourself up to something you’ve never done, but always wanted to try—play in a music ensemble, write something for the Cable, participate in a Theater production, or join a student organization that isn’t full of people like you.

If not now, then when… in your senior year when you only have to worry about your major? When your rich and famous? When you have kids to share it with? When you’re an empty nester? When you’re retired? When… you get the point… WHY NOT here at CSS and WHY NOT now!

Thoughts from students who have already “taken the plunge”:

…“Through Drumline, I have literally become part of the invisible and mysterious flow of the river we call life.”
…“These ensembles to help break the routine of my standard class schedule, but I'm also receiving credit for it.”
…“The funky beats of Steelband have literally allowed me to make sense of my chaotic heartbeat”
…“Playing music is one of the most natural stress relievers I have ever experienced in my life.”
